TUAW Video: a tour of Freeverse

Welcome to the first of what we hope will be many, many TUAW Videos to come. We've done lots of video on TUAW, from Macworld Expo coverage to WWDC interviews to fart apps and more. This time we're trying something a bit different. This time we're taking it slow and profiling Mac and iPhone users, developers, mavens and anyone with a story to tell. If you've ever seen MacHeads or Welcome to Macintosh (both of which are awesome), you know there are plenty of passionate Apple fans out there. If you're reading this blog you probably know this, right? Well, now's the time to tell these stories.

We visited Freeverse in Brooklyn, NY and spent some time checking out the factory where Skee-ball, Moto Chaser, Big Brain Games, Burning Monkey Solitaire and the awesome Flick series of iPhone games come from. We found a passionate, creative team of coders and designers working hard to keep you entertained. We also got a peek at Warp Gate, which looks like a huge game to cram into an iPhone.

Watch the video and tell us if you'd like to see more of these profiles. If you're a passionate Mac user with an interesting story to tell you can get in touch with us here.

On an iPhone? Here's the link for the iPhone version of this video.

Need a Mac or iPhone developer? TUAW job boards are here!

Notice anything new at TUAW? We've had our job boards up for a week now, making sure all the tape would stick when new jobs were posted, and I'm proud to say that the doors are wide open for job seekers and for those looking to fill positions. We've got a button up top that'll take you straight to the boards, and on every post there's a handy button (see below) which will start populating with relevant job searches based on the content of our posts.
tuaw job application emurse work employer
Still not convinced? Did I mention that those looking for hires will see their jobs on our boards, on the boards at Download Squad, plus those jobs are sent over to Juju, Simply Hired, Indeed and other job aggregation services. TUAW and Download Squad together serve up over ten million views a month, and serve over a million visitors each month. If you don't think your job posting will get seen, think again. We'll also write up interesting and amazing people and positions right here on the main page of TUAW from time to time, further extending your hiring reach.

If you're looking for developers, designers, Mac sysadmins or just about anything else, stop by the TUAW job boards and give it a try.

Talkcast tonight: Apple TV 3 reactions and Halloween candy hangovers

Assuming that your Mac isn't still bogged down from the switch back to Standard Time, you should c'mon out tonight and join us for the talkcast. Tonight we'll be talking Apple TV 3.0; if you've upgraded already, we want to hear about your experience, and if you haven't upgraded yet, we want to know which hacks, patches or media players are holding you back. We'll also chat about the Motorola Droid, the latest cellphone challenger to iPhone hegemony. We'll be live at 10 pm ET, so call on in.

To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, or you can try out the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. For the web UI, just click the "TalkShoe Web" button on our profile page at 10 pm Sunday. To call in on regular phone or VoIP lines (take advantange of your free cellphone weekend minutes if you like): dial (724) 444-7444 and enter our talkcast ID, 45077 -- during the call, you can request to talk by keying in *-8.

If you've got a headset or microphone handy on your Mac, you can connect via the free Gizmo or X-Lite SIP clients; basic instructions are here. Talk with you then!

Talkcast reminder: it's Mac Help night, live at 10 pm ET

Last week, we were joined by NPD & Engadget's own Ross Rubin for a fun-filled hour of tablet speculation, iPhone VoIP consideration and Talkshoe & Skype frustration. You can download the show, along with all past shows, from Talkshoe or subscribe in iTunes.

We'll be back live tonight with one of our every-so-often Mac Help hours; call in with your Mac OS X questions, concerns and headscratchers and we'll do our best to advise you, live and in real time (yes, this can go off the rails very easily -- that's part of the spectacle).

TUAW is now on GitHub

As posting code on the blog can sometimes can get very cluttered, we have just set up a GitHub account for TUAW to make everything better and easier for everyone. This is where you'll be able to find code for our developer-related posts. We'll try to get some projects hosted in there very soon, so don't worry that it's empty now! If you haven't heard of it, GitHub is a hosting site for git revisions, which makes it a great place to host and interact with code of all kinds.

You can find our profile at http://github.com/tuaw today. What would you like to see on TUAW for iPhone/Mac development? Let us know in the comments below!

We'll be back live tonight with our outlook for a desktop refresh on the iMac and Mac mini lines, the simmering issues with Guest accounts in Snow Leopard, and AT&T's decision to open up cellular connectivity to VoIP apps. Most of all, we'll be back with you -- and that's the most important thing.

Talkcast tonight: 10 pm EDT Sunday; it was only rock and roll, but we liked it

This is our first TUAW Talkcast of the month, since we were all being slackers and slept through the Labor Day weekend.

Not to worry, we're back again tonight for another hour of live general silliness, with talk about the September 9th announcements, Snow Leopard 10.6.1 upgrade, and other assorted and sundry topics. As usual, we'll also entertain any questions or comments you may have. Our usual group of shady characters will be joined by Ross Rubin from Engadget and NPD.

To participate on TalkShoe, you can use the browser-only client, or you can try out the classic TalkShoe Pro Java client; however, for maximum fun, you should call in. Labor Day holiday means no Talkcast this week

As this is the unofficial last weekend of summer here in the USA (due to the Monday holiday), we're chilling out by the beach with tall glasses of frosty beverages close to hand -- and we're taking the week off from the talkcast. We'll see you next Sunday, after the big 9/9 announcements!

You can download previous shows from Talkshoe or subscribe in iTunes.

The TUAW App Hub and a weekend of giveaways

Last week we launched the TUAW iPhone app to much rejoicing (and a tiny bit of consternation). We also launched our App Hub, currently in beta. By that I mean that we're not quite done adding all the features we'd like to add, but we've put together what we think makes a compelling stop during your search for the Ultimate App. Or, at least a few good apps. We realize there are lots of places to get app info and reviews, and like Apple was to CD burning drives, we're a little late to the game in collating our data.

The App Hub isn't as powerful as Macworld's App Guide, for example. But our hope is that, over time, we can provide a useful resource for finding our reviews and news, and some handy time-saving links. Plus, soon there will be reviews on the App Hub which never make it to the front page of TUAW -- all in an effort to balance the Mac and iPhone sides of the house. There's lots more goodness planned for the future, as we'll slowly be peeling that beta label right off the wrapper.

To celebrate the Hub, the weekend (a holiday in the US) and the general awesomeness of you, our readers, we're starting something pretty cool: regular, frequent app giveaways right on the Hub itself. Chances are you won't see these on the main page. Instead, you'll need to hit the hub for the App Store Giveaway of the Moment. If you're a developer and would like to give away some promo codes, you can get in touch with us here.

We've got another couple of non-app giveaways going on too. In the meanwhile, enjoy the weekend!

Fourteen ways to enjoy TUAW

We're always trying new things around here, from apps to web services to hardware and all kinds of novel ways to do what we do. We also appreciate the fact that many of you read us via RSS or even the iPhone. To that end, here's a list of the many ways to enjoy TUAW in all its myriad forms. If you think we're missing something spectacular, let us know in the comments.

Heeeere's TUAW, in reverse order of no particular importance:

#14 - TUAW on Facebook

We can't really ignore one of the biggest social networks in the world, can we? For weeks I teased the iPhone app on Facebook, and a few of you caught it. We've also been posting deals, newsy tidbits and videos on there. It's a good way to share items, but so far we've kept our RSS out of it. It's entirely likely that we'll put more teasers on Facebook in the future. Let us know in the comments if you'd like to see more or less Facebook interaction overall.

#13 - TUAW on Tumblr

This has been fun. It's so easy to share stuff on Tumblr that a few of us have simply let the bookmarklet do the talking. We see something cool or useful or worth a mention; within seconds it is on our Tumblr page. If you're looking for something a little off-the-menu at times, this is a good place to look.

#12 - TUAW on Flickr

On the right we have a little widget that shows the last three items on Flickr tagged "TUAW" -- so try it! Sometimes we run a "Flickr Find" post showing a crazy Mac setup, so don't be bashful about your workspace. We weren't. You can check out our TUAW rig Flickr pool here.

#11 - TUAW on Video

There's no shortage of TUAW video to choose from. From Blip.tv to Viddler to YouTube and our aggregator VodPod, there's quite the buffet. You can also do a search on Truveo and find our videos across many video sites.

#10 - TUAW on your iPhone

Oh, you haven't heard? TUAW has an iPhone app. In fact, we broke into the top 100 free apps the weekend we launched. Thanks for that, TUAW fans!

#9 - TUAW on Twitter

Of course we're on Twitter, you silly Billy. We have our primary Twitter account, where we'll share cool posts and other fun things, and our Ask TUAW account where you get to ask us Mac, iPhone, iPod and mystery-of-life questions (and hopefully get an answer).

#8 - TUAW on Kindle

What? Yes, we are on the Kindle. Life is strange that way.

#7 - TUAW on Stitcher and TalkShoe

In case you've been hiding every Sunday, we do a regular live Talkcast on TalkShoe. It's a hoot, and you get to chime in via phone, live each week. Once that show is "in the can" and uploaded to iTunes, etc. we also appear on iTunes and in Stitcher. That's handy, given the awesome Stitcher app.

Win a bundle of goodies from Stylit.tv and TUAW

To celebrate the kickoff of their new show, TechStyle, the good folks at Stylit.tv are giving away a bundle of goodies. Not just t-shirts and tchotchkes, either, but a pretty massive haul of loot (see the list on the next page) gathered from Macworld Expo 2009. We met up with the Stylit.tv gang back in January to give away the first couple of bags of goodies at Macworld. But if you missed Macworld, now's your chance to take home a number of products seen at the show.

Before we get to the loot, we've got a special deal for TUAW readers. Stylit.tv goes to trade shows and glitzy events to get cool prize bags to give away. You pretty much just go to this page and enter to win. However, TUAW readers can enter a bonus code that'll give you 40 extra chances to win. The code is TUAW4EVER.

Only the first 500 bonus codes will give you this boost, so good luck! On the next page is the list of prizes you can win now and the premiere of TechStyle at Macworld. The current giveaway ends on September 8, but there is yet another starting after that with yet another big bag of goodies.

Use Spotlight as a reference tool. Type any word in the Spotlight box and one of the top entries will be a definition. Click on it, and it will bring up the dictionary application to check the word in either the dictionary, thesaurus, Apple database, or Wikipedia.
